Cornell Expands AI Literacy Program to All First-Year Students

Following a spring pilot, Cornell University will expand its AI literacy program in the fall to all first-year students and interested students, faculty, and staff. The program includes four modules delivered through Canvas. The pilot showed measurable literacy gains in areas such as how AI tools work and how large language models are developed.

The program provides a potentially replicable model for university AI literacy and may directly affect how new students understand and use AI responsibly. All first-year students will receive systematic instruction covering AI tools and ethical issues. Faculty can integrate program material into courses and support classroom discussion of AI.
