Nigeria's Federal Government, Meta, 3MTT and RAIN Launch Free AI Academy

Nigeria's Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy partnered with Meta, 3MTT and RAIN to launch a free AI Academy for Nigerians, comprising AI skills training, an AI Startup Pitchathon and a six-week developer bootcamp. Training is delivered through free courses on Coursera, DeepLearning.AI and DataCamp, covering generative AI, prompt engineering, multimodal AI, data analytics and building AI applications with Meta's Llama models. The top 100 participants qualify for Meta Blueprint scholarships and up to $5,000 in Meta advertising credits; Pitchathon applications close on August 21, ten startups will pitch at GITEX Nigeria on September 3, and two winners each receive $5,000 in cash, $2,000 in ad credits and an all-expenses-paid trip to Meta's AI Summit in Istanbul, Türkiye, in November.

The programme connects international technology companies' course resources, advertising credits and startup funding directly to Nigeria's national digital skills initiative, giving local developers, founders and young professionals a path from learning to product building to international exposure, which could change the conditions for AI talent supply and early-stage resources for Nigerian startups. For education product practitioners tracking AI talent development and public-private partnership models, the specific structure, funding amounts and selection mechanisms are worth examining. The programme has just launched, so actual participation scale, course completion rates and startup outcomes remain to be seen.
