Massachusetts free AI training tops 38,000 enrollees, skewing older and highly educated

Massachusetts began offering state-sponsored free AI training to all residents in February 2026 through a partnership with Google. By late June, more than 37,500 residents and several hundred non-residents had signed up, a total above 38,300. MassTech data shows 23% of enrollees are 55 or older and nearly 32% hold a graduate degree, compared with 23% statewide.

This is a large-scale rollout of a state-funded partnership with a major technology company's course, and the enrollment data reveals who free AI training actually reaches: older and highly educated residents are overrepresented while those with associate degrees, high school diplomas or less are the smallest share. The state will adjust outreach based on six months of enrollment data, potentially changing which groups future AI training targets.
