Indian Government Establishes Four AI Centers of Excellence, Including One for Education

India's central government has established four AI Centers of Excellence. The newly announced AI-CoE for Education is based at IIT Madras with total funding of ₹50 billion. Three earlier centers led by IIT Ropar, IIT Kanpur, and IISc Bengaluru received combined funding of ₹99 billion, bringing total committed funding for all four to ₹149 billion. The education center has developed automatic speech recognition, optical character recognition, machine translation, and text-to-speech models with a focus on Indian languages.

The centers show that India's government treats AI education as a national strategic priority and may influence product development through specialized innovation. Indian-language models from the education center may improve localized tools, while government funding and dedicated centers may attract more education-technology companies into partnerships.
