NUS to Require Compulsory AI Courses for All Undergraduates From August 2026

The National University of Singapore announced on August 11 that from August 2026 all undergraduates must complete compulsory artificial intelligence courses, including a new university-wide module, Applied Generative AI: From Prompting to Evaluation. AI-related courses will be integrated into the common curricula of the College of Humanities and Sciences, College of Design and Engineering, Business School and Healthcare Professional Education, which cover more than 85 per cent of NUS undergraduates. Every major will also add at least one compulsory course examining how AI is reshaping that profession.

This is a clear institutional shift in Singapore higher education from elective and pilot AI literacy toward university-wide requirements, directly changing undergraduate curriculum structures and graduation requirements as well as teaching tools and assessment methods. For AI education product providers, universities procuring standard tools while also building in-house ones raises the bar for campus access and integration. The original text provides no quantitative evidence on course outcomes or employment results, so actual implementation and tool rollout still need to be observed. NUS undergraduates must complete compulsory AI courses from August 2026, and every major adds at least one course linking AI to the profession, changing graduation requirements. From August 31, all students, faculty and staff get free access to ChatGPT Edu, with more advanced tools piloted, changing campus AI tool supply and privacy controls.
