US House Education Committee Advances K-12 AI Literacy Act Among 10 Bills

The US House Education and Workforce Committee advanced 10 bills during a July 21 markup covering education, labor policy and artificial intelligence. Among them, H.R. 8747, the K-12 AI Literacy and Readiness Act of 2026, would help schools use federal funds for artificial intelligence education. Committee Chair Tim Walberg said the bills aim to ensure students and educators can safely use AI in the classroom. The bills still need House floor consideration, Senate passage and the president's signature to become law.

If enacted, the bill would change the federal funding basis for US K-12 schools to procure and deliver AI education, directly affecting the compliance path for education products entering the school market. It is currently only at the committee stage and still requires House floor, Senate and presidential steps, while Democrats argue existing law already permits Title IV-A funds for AI education, leaving the actual increment to be confirmed. US K-12 schools would gain an explicit legislative basis to use federal funds for AI education, affecting district procurement and curriculum planning. AI education product vendors entering the US public school market would need to track changes in federal fund use and compliance requirements.
