Beijing AI Goes Global: Five of Top Six Open-Source Models and Zhipu Reaches $1 Billion ARR

According to Beijing Daily, as of August 2026 all six leading models in the monthly usage rankings on global AI model aggregator OpenRouter were Chinese open-source models, including two from Beijing companies. Zhipu had more than 6.35 million developers worldwide and $1 billion in annual recurring revenue, up from $100 million in just five months. 01.AI established a joint venture, Q.AI, with Kazakhstan, and orders exceeded RMB 1.5 billion in the first five months of the year.

Beijing's AI expansion overseas is moving from individual technology exports toward jointly built capabilities. Actual worldwide use of open-source models changes the technical foundation choices available to AI education products. International deployment by Zhipu and 01.AI offers reusable infrastructure and localization experience. Developers can use Chinese open-source models to lower product-building costs, while 01.AI's Kazakhstan education partnership provides an emerging-market example combining dual-teacher instruction with AI.
