Coursera Releases Eighth Global Skills Report with New AI-Human Skills Synergy Index

Coursera released the eighth edition of its Global Skills Report on September 29, 2026, introducing the AI-Human Skills Synergy Index covering 98 countries. The United States ranks eighth overall, first in policy, infrastructure and technology readiness, but 27th in learner proficiency and behavior. AI security enrollments among US learners rose 358% year over year, and critical thinking enrollments rose 206%.

The index places national AI policy and infrastructure readiness side by side with actual learner skill behavior, pointing to a gap where technology deployment outpaces workforce capability, which directly affects how universities and enterprises design AI talent development. For education product practitioners, demand for applied courses such as AI security and agentic workflows is growing far faster than overall AI learning demand, implying course supply structures need adjustment. The data comes from platform enrollment behavior rather than independent assessment, so rankings reflect Coursera's user base and cannot be equated with overall national workforce levels. Universities and enterprises can adjust AI course structures to add applied content such as AI security, agentic workflows and critical thinking. Adoption of micro-credentials as skill signals may continue to expand, with US AI-focused micro-credential enrollments up 84% year over year.
