Coursera Report: UK Ranks 19th of 98 Countries for AI Readiness, AI Skills Proficiency Is Biggest Competitive Risk
Coursera released its eighth annual Global Skills Report, introducing the AI-Human Skills Synergy Index, which covers nearly 100 countries and places the UK 19th out of 98. The index draws on a subset of the 300M+ learners on the Coursera and Udemy platforms and combines broader readiness data from Oxford Insights' Government AI Readiness Index. The report says the UK ranks in the 97th percentile globally for government capacity, policy infrastructure and technology readiness, but in the 24th percentile for learner AI proficiency.
The report extends the assessment of AI talent development from government policy and infrastructure to actual workforce skills, directly affecting how education institutions, employers and training providers in the UK and other countries judge curriculum priorities. For AI education product teams, rising demand for AI security, ethics and governance, and critical thinking courses means products need to cover both technical ability and applied judgment. The data come from platform learner samples and a third-party readiness index, not independent research on education outcomes, so rankings and growth differences reflect learning behavior on specific platforms only. UK education institutions and employers can use the findings to adjust AI training priorities, placing human skills alongside AI skills in curricula and hiring requirements. AI education product teams can watch course areas with faster growth, including AI security, ethics and governance, and critical thinking.
