South Korea's ETRI Develops AI Korean Language Teaching System

The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) in South Korea has developed an AI teaching system for Korean language education that allows learners to engage in free conversation while progressing through a structured curriculum. External blind testing showed the system achieved a 93.8% response accuracy rate and a 18.6% error rate, outperforming GPT-4o-mini and GPT-5.1. The system plans to expand to reading and writing education and develop a smart glasses-based learning platform for daily Korean learning.

ETRI's Korean language AI teaching system outperformed GPT series models in blind testing, demonstrating its technical competitiveness. The system combines free conversation with curriculum-based learning, potentially changing foreign language teaching methods. However, its performance is limited to specific evaluation conditions and does not mention long-term learning outcomes.
