Harvard Study: AI Tutor Helps Students Learn 2x More Than Classroom Teaching
Harvard researchers found that students using an AI tutor learned more than twice as much physics as those learning in a classroom. The study involved 194 undergraduate students, with each student trying both methods. Students using the AI tutor scored a median of 4.5 on a test, compared with 3.5 for classroom learners, and spent 49 minutes learning compared with about 60 minutes. Learners reported high motivation with the AI tutor.
This study offers verifiable quantitative evidence on the effectiveness of AI tutors in higher education, which may influence schools' decisions to adopt AI teaching tools. Direct impacts include: schools may be more inclined to pilot AI tutors to supplement classroom teaching; product developers can reference the learning time and motivation data to optimize design. Limitations include the study covering only 194 undergraduates and the subject of physics, so results should not be directly generalized to other subjects or age groups.
