India AI upskilling demand shifts to experienced professionals as Simplilearn AI enrolments grow over 40% year-on-year
According to The Financial Express, demand for AI upskilling courses in India is increasingly driven by experienced professionals. Simplilearn's AI course enrolments grew more than 40% year-on-year, with agentic AI courses recording over 100% growth among working professionals; Coursera's AI course enrolments in India rose around 37% in the first half of 2026 from a year earlier; upGrad's technology course sign-ups between January and August 2026 were about 2.55 times those in the same period last year, with more than 90% of learners choosing AI-focused programmes.
The shift shows that the paying audience and course structure of AI upskilling are tilting toward experienced professionals, directly affecting how edtech platforms design curricula and how talent is supplied. For product teams, the move from foundational concepts to agents and production applications means training content must be tied to real business functions; for schools and teachers, the rise of self-funded AI learning among working professionals reflects demand for skills beyond degree education. The figures come from platform disclosures, lack independent third-party verification, and the growth bases and statistical definitions are not fully public. Edtech platforms need to shift course focus from AI fundamentals to agents, multi-agent systems and production applications to match demand from experienced professionals. A rising share of self-funded AI learning among working professionals may change the division of labour between corporate training budgets and university degree education.
