Injini Opens Applications for AI Education Venture Builder, Five Teams to Receive $25,000 Each

Cape Town-based education technology incubator Injini has opened applications for its AI for Education Venture Builder and Incubation Program, aimed at prospective founders in South Africa, Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe. The eight-month programme will start with 12 teams working on research, product development and live testing, then select five for a three-month incubation from April to June 2027, each receiving $25,000 in equity-free funding. Applications opened on 7 September and close on 27 September 2026, with support from philanthropic funder Coefficient Giving.

Africa is significantly underrepresented in the data used to train AI tools, and schools in the region contend with teacher shortages, weak foundational literacy and numeracy, multiple home languages, limited connectivity and device costs, so AI products trained mainly on material and users from elsewhere may struggle with local languages, curricula and classroom conditions. Injini's use of pilot evidence and local teams directly affects how AI education products are supplied and adopted in southern Africa; however, the programme is still at the application stage, with no selected teams, pilot results or product outcome data yet. Early-stage AI education teams in southern Africa gain a funding and incubation path from concept to tested product, with five teams each receiving $25,000 in equity-free funding. The programme requires teams to combine technical ability, lived experience of an education problem and commercial or operational skills, potentially changing team composition and validation standards for local AI education products.
