Marist University and IBM Launch Innovation Incubator with IBM z17 to Advance AI Research and Student Career Readiness

On September 22, 2026, Marist University and IBM announced a new Innovation Incubator at the Poughkeepsie, New York campus, equipped with an IBM z17 mainframe to provide AI computing power on campus. Initial projects include controlled synthetic marketing campaigns run by autonomous AI agent teams to stress test guardrails, quantum optimization algorithms for real-time financial data, and exploring how AI can improve polling methodologies and survey design. The partnership, now more than 50 years old, expands from enterprise computing and computer science education into university-wide interdisciplinary AI research and experiential learning.

The collaboration brings enterprise-scale AI computing and real research projects onto an undergraduate campus, allowing students outside computer science to take part in AI application and governance topics such as stress testing agent guardrails. For AI education, it offers a model of industry directly supporting research training beyond the classroom and extending AI capability across majors; its value depends on whether the projects actually launch and produce verifiable student participation data. The three initial projects are mostly at the planning or scoping stage, with no enrollment numbers, course credits, or outcome data yet. Students outside computer science gain access to enterprise-scale AI computing and interdisciplinary research projects, extending AI training into business, communication, and political science. Topics such as agent guardrails and AI polling methods enter campus research, providing a teaching setting to test AI governance and public data methods.
