Microsoft Publishes Five AI in Education Principles

On September 16, Microsoft published five principles for AI in education covering safety and privacy, educator control, student thinking, education systems, and AI readiness. The post also recaps its earlier AFT privacy and safety agreement, which is recorded separately.

Schools can use the public principles when assessing Microsoft Education AI products; implementation remains to be seen. The AFT agreement mentioned in the post is an earlier, separately recorded event. Schools buying Microsoft Education products can point to the standard to require data-use limits and human oversight, and other vendors may face pressure to follow. Education AI products may need to build in educator control, transparency and safeguards against cognitive offloading, shifting how products are evaluated.
