Tamil Nadu Plans AI Education from School to University and an AI City

Tamil Nadu's Minister for Artificial Intelligence, Information Technology and Digital Services, R Kumar, said on Thursday that the state plans to introduce AI education from school level to university and build a dedicated AI ecosystem including an "AI City." The AI City would include research centres, global capability centres, centres of excellence and world-class educational institutions to attract talent and encourage overseas skilled professionals to return. The minister said a few sites have been identified for the AI City, and the state plans a Tamil large language model with partners such as ICT Academy and IIT Madras.

The plan extends AI education from higher education into schools and links it to an AI City, global capability centres and a Tamil large language model, directly affecting local curriculum design, teacher capability requirements and the pace of AI talent supply. For AI education product providers, a state-level push on school AI courses and university research partnerships could create new procurement and pilot markets; however, the minister's remarks remain planning intentions, with no specific curriculum, timeline or budget announced. Schools and universities in Tamil Nadu may add AI courses and skills requirements, raising demand for teacher training and curriculum resources. The AI City and Tamil large language model plans may attract AI education products, research institutions and global capability centres to partner locally.
