UCL and University of Mauritius Sign Three-Year AI Education MoU
UCL and the University of Mauritius have agreed a new partnership to support AI education and practical skills development in Mauritius. Following approval from the Mauritian Cabinet, the MoU establishes a three-year framework for the universities to coordinate student projects, develop teaching pathways and share outcomes. Mauritius becomes the first country in UCL's IXN Global South-South Programme, with plans for an AI Engineering Lab at the University of Mauritius and a local UoM-IXN network. The inaugural meeting took place on 4 August 2026 in Mauritius, where nine UCL students presented offline prototypes.
The partnership translates AI education into concrete arrangements including teaching pathways, micro-credentials, project-based learning and a local lab, and specifies that micro-credentials must meet the Higher Education Commission's published standards, with formal recognition decisions remaining with the Commission. For AI talent development, this is the first country-level case under a South-South cooperation framework, linking student projects, teaching pathways and local industry challenges. Two direct effects stand out: Mauritius gains institutional support for local AI engineering capacity and offline AI tool development, and participating students and professionals can build practical evidence through projects and micro-credentials. Limits remain: the lab is scheduled to start only in October 2026, the first challenge areas are still possible directions, and formal credential recognition is not yet determined. The University of Mauritius will gain an AI Engineering Lab and the UoM-IXN network, allowing students and academics to work on challenges proposed by government, industry and public-sector partners. Participating students and professionals can build practical evidence through project-based learning and micro-credentials, but formal recognition of micro-credentials still depends on the Higher Education Commission's standards and decisions.
