Voorhees University Launches AI Institute With $1.1888M Federal Grant
Voorhees University in South Carolina announced the creation of an Artificial Intelligence Institute of Technology and Research Center (AIITRC), funded by a $1,188,800 grant from the U.S. Department of Labor, to transform Bedford Hall into a hub for AI education, workforce training, research and community engagement. The center will integrate AI skills across academic programs, expand undergraduate AI research, prepare students for AI-related careers in industry, government and education, and offer workforce training and community programming for residents and organizations in Denmark, Bamberg and surrounding rural communities. The performance period runs from Oct. 1, 2026, through Sept. 30, 2031, and the university has developed a long-term sustainability plan covering endowment growth, workforce training revenue, future grants, industry partnerships, sponsored research and philanthropic support.
This is a named case of federal U.S. labor funding going directly to university AI education infrastructure and rural workforce training, covering curriculum integration, undergraduate research, faculty professional development and community training. It offers reference value for those tracking AI talent pipelines, university AI center models and education products entering rural markets. Its impact is currently limited to the university and surrounding rural communities, and actual teaching and training outcomes still need public data during the performance period. Students at the university can access interdisciplinary AI courses, undergraduate research opportunities and career preparation for industry, government and education roles. Residents and organizations in Denmark, Bamberg and surrounding rural communities can access AI-related workforce training and community programming.
