Boston University Adds AI-Free Writing Requirement for English Majors

Boston University's English department faculty voted to approve updated learning outcomes, including a provision requiring English majors to demonstrate sustained, original writing generated without AI assistance. Associate Professor of English Joseph Rezek confirmed the vote on Wednesday. The outcome applies at the program level, while instructors continue to set AI rules for individual courses and assignments. The university's revised Academic Conduct Code, effective July 1, states that unauthorized AI use can constitute academic misconduct.

The change elevates AI-free independent writing from a course-level rule to a program-level graduation competency, giving other universities a concrete example for defining AI boundaries in writing disciplines. It also connects to BU's Academic Conduct Code, effective July 1, under which AI use not expressly authorized by an instructor can constitute academic misconduct, with sanctions including grade reductions, suspension and, in serious cases, expulsion. The department has not yet published how the competency will be assessed, and the central bulletin has not been updated, so enforcement remains to be seen. English majors must demonstrate sustained original writing without AI assistance at the program level, while course and assignment rules remain with instructors. Other universities gain a concrete case of listing independent writing as a program competency when setting AI policies for writing disciplines.
