Teacher Looks Beyond School to Technology Leaders as K–12 Education Breaks Silos in the AI Era

After receiving a $150,000 Delaware Pathways Middle Grades Grant, Freire Charter School teacher Beth Yirga organized a multi-party meeting in October 2025. A student had asked, 'If AI can do everything, what's the point of learning?' prompting her to seek advice across industries. At the Women Who Code Summit, she found that technology executives and educators shared the same concerns. More than 47% of the school's students are classified as economically disadvantaged, and the project must meet Delaware's career and technical education exploration standards for middle school.

The case shows K–12 educators actively pursuing cross-industry collaboration in response to AI's effect on careers and skills, potentially changing curriculum design. It encourages schools to include social capital and career exposure in curricula and offers others a collaboration model that may deepen dialogue between educators and technology companies.
