Global Study Finds Physics Searches Decline as Students Turn to AI

A study by Bar-Ilan University and collaborators found that Google searches for physics concepts declined steadily from 2022-23 to 2024-25, with the largest drops in mechanics and non-English-speaking countries. Wikipedia traffic for physics showed a similar pattern. The findings suggest students may prefer AI tools like ChatGPT for direct explanations, not that they are learning less.

This study provides quantitative evidence of students substituting AI tools for traditional search, directly relevant for educators. It suggests AI may reduce language barriers for non-English speakers but raises concerns about information evaluation skills. Teachers need to adapt strategies to guide critical use of AI explanations and strengthen information literacy. AI education products can optimize for language diversity and visual content to meet student needs.
