UNESCO Publishes 26 Think Pieces on AI and the Future of Education

UNESCO published on 8 September 2026 a compilation titled The algorithm in the room: Seeing and confronting the implications of AI for the future of education, containing 26 think pieces. The collection is organized around six urgent questions, covering agency and oversight, how young people develop relationally, emotionally and cognitively, what is meaningful for pedagogy and assessment, how we think and express ourselves, how education is governed as a common good, and how AI may affect imagination about education's future.

Published by UNESCO, the compilation frames the impact of AI and algorithms on education systems as an issue to be confronted and offers six questions as a reference for policy discussion, school governance and product design. It does not set new regulation or teaching methods and contains no independent research or quantitative results, so its role is agenda-setting and framing rather than providing directly actionable measures. Education policymakers and schools can use the six questions to examine agency, oversight and governance issues in AI use. AI education product practitioners can review product positioning and responsibility boundaries against the questions on pedagogy, assessment and public accountability.
