Beijing Requires at Least Eight Hours of General AI Education per Academic Year in Every Primary and Secondary School

In March 2025, the Beijing Municipal Education Commission released the Beijing Work Plan for Advancing AI Education in Primary and Secondary Schools (2025–2027). Starting in the autumn 2025 semester, it requires all primary and secondary schools in the city to provide at least eight hours of general AI education per academic year.

Schools may offer standalone courses or integrate the content into information technology, general technology, science, integrated practical activities, and labor education. Primary school emphasizes experiential introduction, middle school understanding and application, and high school comprehensive practice, with ethics, safety, and cautious use of generative AI throughout.

This policy remains in its implementation cycle and is an important baseline for understanding local expansion progress in 2026. Follow-up should verify actual course delivery, teacher staffing, course-resource quality, and implementation of evaluation and compliant admission mechanisms for educational AI products.
