China Advances Stage-Based AI Courses from Primary School through University

An action plan issued in April calls for China to introduce AI courses progressively from primary school through university, while Beijing began general AI education from primary through high school in fall 2025. National guidance issued in 2025 recommends games and hands-on practice in primary school, integrating AI into subjects such as physics in middle school, and research projects involving problem identification, solution design, and testing in high school.

Implementation quality depends on teachers, curricula, and computing resources. The policy also calls for preserving reading, writing, arithmetic, and basic reasoning and for preventing students from copying generated material or relying excessively on AI for creative work. Schools need stage-specific course design as well as teacher capability, equipment, and cross-disciplinary collaboration. Teachers must cover AI use, foundational cognitive practice, and verification of generated content.
