Google Lets Schools Turn Off Its Gemini AI Tutor, but Search's AI Overviews and AI Mode Have No Switch

A Wall Street Journal investigation published on October 2, 2026 reports that Google gives school districts separate administrative switches for the Gemini app, Gemini Notebook, the Gemini tab in Classroom, and Gemini inside Docs, Gmail and Slides, but Google Search's AI Overviews and AI Mode have no switch at all. New York City, Los Angeles and Fairfax County Public Schools in Virginia each used bans, their own tools or a browser plug-in to block Google's AI results in Search. Google disputed the testing method and said AI paired with teacher-led instruction helps students learn.
